Chapter 8
As Romeo watched his dreams go up in smoke, he felt a part of him die inside. He’d risked everything to help Jane, and while he didn’t regret it, he had to wonder why he’d worked so hard only to have it destroyed.
Men rushed past him, carrying buckets.
“Is anyone inside?” one of them asked.
Romeo shook his head. He’d seen Sol storm off in the other direction. He supposed he should stay and help put out the fire, but it seemed like a small enough fire that it would soon be under control.
“No,” Romeo said. “I was the last to leave.”
He didn’t add the part about Sol, not wanting to cause any more trouble for the man than he already had. But that was the worst of it. He hadn’t done anything to Sol, other than associate with a woman Sol considered his enemy.
As he made his way toward the shop, where his trunk awaited him, Romeo wasn’t sure what he was going to do. Fortunately, the evening was unseasonably warm, though the old timers had told him that meant snow was coming in the next day or so.
For tonight, he’d take his trunk to the spot where he and Jane used to meet. However, that plan seemed foolish by the time Romeo had dragged it all the way out to the street.
Jack Peregrine, who owned Peregrines’ Post and Freight, stopped him. “Can I give you a hand?”
It had always impressed Romeo that this man, who’d walked with a limp, due to what Romeo believed was a war injury, was always so willing to help. Even though Jack was technically one of Sol’s enemies, due to being friends with Charlie, he’d always treated Sol and Romeo with kindness
Out of necessity, Sol was still forced to do business with Jack, but he always complained bitterly about it.
Romeo paused and sat on his truck. “Yes, but other than getting it off Sol’s property, I’m not sure what to do with it.”
Jack gave him a strange look. “Why does it need to be off Sol’s property?”
Romeo sighed. He might as well tell people because it would be around town soon enough. “Sol kicked me out. It’s my own fault, because I was talking to Jane Creary behind his back. I thought it was worth the risk, but now I have no place to go.”
A thoughtful expression crossed Jack’s face. “Do the Crearys know you’re friends with Jane?”
Romeo sighed. “No. We’ve been keeping it from everyone because we knew our families would disapprove. Nothing inappropriate happened. I was making a stained-glass window for her, and she was helping me with a project. I don’t want her to get in trouble, too.”
Jack nodded. “I can see why you’d hide it from Sol, but the Crearys are reasonable people, and if everything is as innocent as you say, then you should have no trouble telling the truth.”
He’d like to think that, especially given all of Jane’s fond words about her family. But he’d barely spoken to any of the others, given Sol’s problems with them.
